Checklist: The 5 Materials Needed for Spousal Citizenship

Proof that your spouse is an Italian citizen (Italian passport, or citizenship recognition letter/email from Italian Consulate)
Proof of marriage to your spouse (a certified copy Italian marriage certificate)
Note: The U.S. (or non-Italian) marriage record, complete with apostille and translation, must first be registered with the consulate by the Italian spouse
Certified copy of the applicant's birth certificate
- The birth certificate must be in long form
- Translated into Italian
- Must have an apostille attached
Criminal background check of the applicant
- Federal and State background check reports from every US state where the applicant lived, plus the state of birth
- Translated into Italian
- Must have an apostille attached
Proof of Italian language proficiency of the applicant
