Checklist: The 5 Materials Needed for Spousal Citizenship

  1. Proof that your spouse is an Italian citizen (Italian passport, or citizenship recognition letter/email from Italian Consulate)

  2. Proof of marriage to your spouse (a certified copy Italian marriage certificate)
    Note: The U.S. (or non-Italian) marriage record, complete with apostille and translation, must first be registered with the consulate by the Italian spouse 

  3. Certified copy of the applicant's birth certificate

    • The birth certificate must be in long form

    • Translated into Italian

    • Must have an apostille attached

  4. Criminal background check of the applicant

    • Federal and State background check reports from every US state where the applicant lived, plus the state of birth

    • Translated into Italian

    • Must have an apostille attached

  5. Proof of Italian language proficiency of the applicant
