Eligibility: You - Your Parent

Your father or mother* was born in Italy, was an Italian citizen at the time of your birth, and you never renounced Italian citizenship.

  • Your father's birth certificate

  • Your mother's birth certificate

  • Your parents' marriage record

  • The applicable parents’ record of naturalization, or proof that he/she never naturalized

  • Death certificate for the parent through whom you are seeking citizenship

  • Your birth certificate

  • Your marriage record

  • Divorce decrees for you/your parents (if applicable)

  • Prior/subsequent marriage records for you/your parent through whom you are seeking citizenship (if applicable)

* If an Italian ancestor in your direct line is a woman (you, your mother, your grandmother), born before January 1, 1948, she can only claim Italian citizenship from her father, and can only pass Italian citizenship to her children (male or female) if they were born after January 1, 1948. If this is the only bar to your eligibility, you may still have your citizenship recognized by having your application reviewed by the courts in Italy. For additional information, schedule a consultation with Your Italian Passport. Costs of the call will be applied as a credit towards attorney retainer(s) or comprehensive package purchase.
